I know, I know
What is your response when a friend calls you out about not taking time for yourself? I know, I should, if only... Well, you may be more well-adjusted than I. My absolute, knee-jerk reaction is to give reasons why I can't. EVEN THOUGH:
Research proves better results come from self-care.
It is honestly a doable practice.
I know they are right.
Hear the Music. Don't Just Listen
I must confess, I am an odd duck. No, really! I also know, without question, there are more odd ducks out there. That is why I am writing this. I have become in tune with my inner oddities. Today, my focus is on music.
I love, love, love music. I also love singing out loud, even though I know I suck! Don't worry, I will not subject you to my cat-like shrieks today. I simply want to encourage readers to take time to jam out. I promise, it can lift a sad mood, a depressed mood, or even an angry mood.
When I was growing up, I loved country music. The only problem was the era. I grew up in the 1990s. If you don't already know, the sad country love songs were the rage. It did not help me at all with my teen angst and heartache to listen to Travis Tritt on a loop. We feel what we listen to.
This is not some brand new thing. It isn't even remotely new. Also, it is so very basic, I should be embarrassed by how long it took me to put it together. Alas, I did, though. Now, instead of just pulling up my playlist and starting it, I actually organize the contents accordingly.
I'm Sad and Want to Stay Sad
True, there are those days when we feel hurt. Feeling justified in our sorrow, we decide to stay that way. Folks, that is just fine. As long as you don't move into sadsville for keeps. I have a playlist entitled: _ucking Feelings. It is just for those times.
Now, here is my mindfulness rearing up. If the only playlist I seem to be going for is that, maybe I need to do something. I could reach out to a friend, take my dog on a walk, write something new...
Permission Granted
We all like different ways of listening to our music. The Og may like records. Gen Xers perhaps stereo or even CDs .Youngins are likely streamers. That is fine. My advice is to get serious and get a setup. Look, I am poor. No, I mean POOR. These products don't have to break the bank.
For the OG:
Vintage Bluetooth Turntable with Built-in Stereo Speakers, 3-Speed Belt-Driven Record Player (33/45/78 RPM), HiFi Sound Quality, Ideal for Audiophiles and Gift-Giving – VinylVibe.
This is a mix of old and new schools, with a four and a half star rating. It is also very reasonably priced at under $60. Not too shabby if you ask me. It's worth it for you to get out of a funk without damaging your health. Right?
Fellow Gen Xers:
Not all speakers are created equal. I have this fellow, he lives up to the 4.5 stars, while not breaking you. This may be on the back end of X, I know. So, to be true to my time, I will throw us a bonus.
Craig Portable Top-Loading CD Boombox with AM/FM Stereo Radio and Cassette Player/Recorder in Black | Cassette Player/Recorder | LED Display (Black)I personally own this one as well. Although it has low mileage, it offers it all. If I so desire, I can make a mix tape, wallow in my first heartache, or relive some of the BEST times I have ever had. This is also rated 4 stars.
Youngins:
Well, to be honest, I doubt there is much I can school ya'll on in the streaming area. Still, it would not be right if I didn't at least throw something out there. So, how about three months of Amazon Music for free?
I also have to confess, I, too, subscribed to AMU. Seriously, I don't walk around with a boombox.
In a nutshell
Give yourself the green light. We are all aware that the holidays bring out the best and worst in us all. Why not arm yourself with every available hack in the arsenal? I do.
